Registered Nurses practice as members of a multi-disciplinary team in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act, the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Nursing Act, and the Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).  In keeping with the Hospital’s Mission, Vision and Values, and policies and procedures, RN’s provide professional nursing care to patients.  In addition to the job functions of the registered nurse, the Geriatric Mental health nurse provides client centered treatment rehabilitation and support to referred Renfrew County clients in both the community and long-term care facilities.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current certificate of competence as Registered Nurse (RN) from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Completed PIECES Learning and Development program
  • Completed DementiAbility Methods: The Montessori Way program
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) 
  • Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) Certification or Certificate in Mental Health or Gerontology or willingness to complete
  • Basic cardiac life support certification
  • Minimum of two years of progressive and current experience in Geriatric Mental Health Nursing including specialized skills in assessment of dementia, delirium, mental health and addictions
  • Demonstrated excellence in planning and delivery of education sessions to individuals or groups
  • Valid Class G Driver’s License and access to a vehicle
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in the initiation, coordination of and participation in team/family conferences and clinical activities
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and expertise in geriatrics which will be assessed through interview and testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Working knowledge of computer applications and software such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of the College of Nurses standards of practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning in nursing
  • Embodies the LEAN ideology by actively and continually seeking opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to meet the attendance standards of the Hospital
  • Bilingualism preferred (French/English)
